About the Position

The Cane Testing Service (CTS), a division of the South African Sugar Association (SASA), provides a specialist service to determine the quality of individual grower cane deliveries to the mill for cane payment purposes. This analytical chemistry service assesses the recoverable value content in cane delivered to the mill by growers, providing a neutral and objective basis on which to calculate recoverable value payment by miller to grower.

We have an excellent opportunity for someone with one year relevant experience in a similar environment that has included supervisory responsibilities. Your normal work week will be from Tuesday to Friday (you may finish on a Saturday if your shift begins on a Friday night).

There are 6 vacancies in total and they are based at the CTS Laboratory at the following sugar mills in Kwa-Zulu Natal (1x Umfolozi Sugar Mill), (1x Sezela Sugar Mill), (1x Noodsberg Sugar Mill) and (3x Umzimkulu Sugar Mill)his position is based at the CTS laboratory at the Eston sugar mill in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Reporting to a Laboratory Supervisor, the Laboratory Analyst is accountable for the routine analysis of sugar cane samples. Supervision of shift personnel will also form a key performance area.

You will be responsible for:

  • Supervising a shift of +/- 6 employees

  • Ensuring adherence to official cane testing methods

  • Analysing and reporting using a laboratory information management system

  • Routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and calibration of laboratory instruments;

  • Adherence to health and safety standards (NOSA)

  • Administration, ranging from the recording of customer queries to employee time and attendance

You will bring to the role:

  • A Bachelor of Science Degree/B Tech Degree in Analytical Chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Quality Assurance;

  • A proven track record as an analyst and supervisor in a plant environment;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office;

Payment and conditions are in line with those for the Bargaining Council for the Sugar Manufacturing and Refining Industry.

  • Shift work and overtime are compulsory. A shift allowance will be paid for all shifts worked.

  • You will need to pass a pre-employment medical examination in line with the inherent requirements of the job.
